Consider this before using AI browsers at work

Have you ever stopped to think about what your browser is doing behind the scenes while you work?

Most people still think of a browser as a simple window to the internet. But a new wave of AI‑powered browsers is changing that completely. These tools are quick, intelligent, and capable of automating tasks that used to take minutes—or even hours.

That sounds great… until you realize they may also be quietly collecting or transmitting data you’d never normally share.

New technology can be incredibly helpful. But we’ve all seen how something useful quickly becomes risky when it’s used without the right safeguards. AI browsers are a perfect example.

AI browsers (such as Microsoft Edge with Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas, and others) do far more than display websites. They can read on‑screen content, summarize it, translate it, pull data together, and even take actions automatically.

But here’s the issue: they can also be manipulated.

Researchers have found that many AI browsers prioritize a smooth user experience over stronger security by default. In practice, that means they’re designed to be helpful first—and safe second.

And that creates challenges for businesses.

Why? Because these browsers don’t just show your data. They often send what’s on your screen to a cloud‑based AI system so it can interpret, summarize, or interact with it. That may include sensitive emails, financial information, client records, internal documents—anything an employee has open at the time.

If the AI assistant can “see” it, there’s a good chance it’s already left the device and been processed elsewhere.

Things get even riskier when you consider that some AI browsers can perform actions on their own. They can navigate websites during logged‑in sessions, interact with content, and complete routine tasks.

That’s fantastic for productivity—until a malicious webpage convinces the AI to hand over information without the user realizing it.

The message is clear: AI browsers can introduce unnecessary risk if they’re not configured and used correctly.

So what should you think about before rolling them out?

Start with the fundamentals: understand where the data goes.

Many AI browsers don’t let you keep processing local to the device. Instead, the AI engine runs in the provider’s cloud. That means your cybersecurity and data protection policies must reflect this—especially if you handle sensitive, regulated, or client‑related information.

You also need to consider how staff use these tools day‑to‑day.

Even if the browser meets your security requirements, an employee could introduce risk simply by opening an AI sidebar while sensitive information is visible in another tab.

The AI doesn’t distinguish public from private. It processes whatever it can access.

And then there’s the temptation factor.

Because these tools can automate repetitive work, some employees might try to use them to breeze through mandatory training or compliance tasks. An automated click‑through is not the same as a trained, security‑aware person.

None of this means AI browsers are bad. Far from it.

They’re powerful, promising tools with real business benefits. But like any emerging technology, they need the right guardrails.

If you decide to allow AI browsers in your organization, make sure staff understand how they work. Remind them that anything visible in the browser could potentially be sent to the AI service. Encourage them to avoid using AI features while viewing highly sensitive data. And ensure your IT team can centrally manage settings so convenience never outweighs safety.

We’re still early in the lifecycle of AI browsers. The risks aren’t fully known yet, and the default settings often lean toward convenience rather than security. Use them responsibly—after proper assessments, policies, and training.
