“Ask Copilot” is coming to your Taskbar (but only if you want it to)

| Pat Midzio |

Ever wish your computer simply understood what you were trying to do—without the endless clicking, guessing, or digging through menus?

Microsoft is moving in that direction.

In the latest Windows 11 preview, a new feature called Ask Copilot is being tested, and it’s taking a prominent spot right on your taskbar.

Today, the Windows taskbar search box handles the basics: files, apps, and settings.

With Ask Copilot, that same box gets a major upgrade.

Now, AI helps interpret what you’re trying to do and guides you straight to the right action.

Try typing something like:

“Open the invoice template I used last month”

“Connect to the projector”

“How do I split this PDF?”

Instead of a list of results, Copilot can do the task—opening the file, adjusting the setting, or giving you a quick answer.

It’s the search you already know, but far smarter and far more helpful.

You’ll also notice new icons next to the Ask Copilot box, offering one‑click access to Copilot Vision (for understanding what’s on your screen) and voice commands (so you can speak instead of type).

And if this feels a bit too AI-forward for your workflow, don’t worry—it’s completely opt‑in.

You’ll only see Ask Copilot if you enable it in Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Ask Copilot.

Otherwise, classic search stays exactly as it is.

Microsoft also emphasizes that Ask Copilot doesn’t gain any new access to your data. It relies on the same permissions as standard Windows Search—no hidden scanning, no digging through private content.

What’s the business benefit?

Time saved. Focus protected.

Instead of your team losing momentum hunting for documents, adjusting settings, or Googling simple how‑tos, Copilot gets them there instantly. It’s another small but meaningful step toward a smoother, more productive workday where technology quietly supports the work rather than slowing it down.

Ask Copilot is still in preview, but it’s likely to roll out more broadly soon.

Would you switch it on when it arrives? Or stick with classic search for now? For the moment, the choice is entirely yours.
